DAILY CARE FOR DELICATE GUMS
The gums are an essential component of your mouth, as they form part of the tooth support structures and help in tasks as important as chewing.
The oral cavity and the gums are exposed to the oral environment, and thus are in permanent contact with external agents that can affect oral and dental health.
This is why prevention through daily care of sensitive gums is so important.
FACTORS THAT INCREASE THE RISK
FOR DEVELOPING GUM DISEASE
Excessive dental plaque build-up
Chronic stress
Poor brushing technique
Smoking
Orthodontic appliances
Diabetes and immune system dysfunction
Pregnancy and menopause
Some medicatins
Healthy gums are characterised by a pale pink color and they are firm. Because gingivitis is usually not painful, many people do not realize that they may have a disease.
The main cause of gum-related disease is the accumulation of bacterial plaque on the surface of the teeth and at the edge of the gums.
Dental plaque (or oral biofilm) is a colourless and sticky film formed by bacteria and other substances that continuously builds up on teeth.
It is important to brush and floss your teeth and rinse with mouthwash every day to remove dental plaque (oral biofilm).
DO YOU HAVE GUM DISEASES?
Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. The main symptoms are inflammation and bleeding. Gingivitis is reversible.
If gingivitis is not treated, it may lead to periodontitis
It is important to monitor the progress of gingivitis to prevent it from evolving to become periodontitis, a deep gum infection characterised by a loss of the structures that hold teeth in place, possibly leading to tooth loss. Periodontitis is irreversible.
